To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the KAMEN RIDER series, producer Shin-ichiro Shirakura conceived a duo of "Showa reboot" films more faithful to Shotaro Ishinomori’s original manga.  In these films, the Shocker monsters and Kamen Riders were redesigned for a new look.  KAMEN RIDER: THE FIRST (2005)  Takeshi Hongo, a young scientist, is abducted by an evil organization called Shocker and surgically altered to become Kamen RIder 1, a grasshopper-like cyborg designed to fight in their vanguard. A reporter named Asuka Midorikawa along with her fiancé, Katsuhiko Yano, are investigating an urban legend about monsters when Kamen Rider 1 appears and kills Katsuhiko! When Takeshi comes to his senses, he is now considered a traitor and targeted for assassination by Shocker who deploys Hayato Ichimonji as a newly-created cyborg– meet Kamen Rider 2! (88 mins.)  KAMEN RIDER: THE NEXT (2007)  Two years have gone by since Takeshi Hongo and Hayato Ichimonji betrayed Shocker. Meanwhile, a recent murder spree is in progress where each victim is found with their faces mutilated in a grisly manner.  According to an urban legend, every time a specific song by pop idol Chiharu is played, another dead body turns up. When Takeshi heads over to Chiharu’s apartment, he discovers a Chiharu imposter with a disfigured face… This entry was controversial amongst some fans for its injection of eerie J-Horror elements.
